The department of "Agribusiness and Management" was established in 1928 on the basis of the agronomy department of the Azerbaijan Polytechnic Institute under the name "Organization of production in socialist agricultural enterprises", the department was headed by Professor M. Avdeyenko.
In 1931, the Agricultural Institute was moved to Ganja. At that time the director of this institute was professor Islam Datiyev, in 1937-1974 it was headed by a candidate of agricultural sciences, assistant professor, honored economist of the republic Mamed Efendiyev.
During this period, due to the serious need for teachers with scientific degrees at the department, under the scientific supervision of M. Afandiyev, many young teachers were involved in research work, got postgraduate and dissertation education and were awarded the degree of candidate of sciences.
In 1939, Soltan Mirzayev received the degree of Candidate of Economic Sciences in Moscow, later became the director of the Institute, professor, minister of state farms, secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Azerbaijan for agriculture, deputy of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR and Azerbaijan returned to the department, and worked here as a teacher.
When the war of 1941-1945 began, certain changes took place in the department. Movsum Poladov (director of the institute in those years), deputy director Gafar Rakhimzade, Zahid Rzayev and several teachers who worked here went to war voluntarily. After the war, M. Poladov became a professor, minister of agriculture and later again a director of the institute.
Over time, the department was further developed, the number of subjects taught increased, and there was organised necessary teaching staff. In subsequent years, in connection with the increase in the academic load and the number of students, new departments were created, "Economics of Socialist Agriculture" and "Accounting and Statistics in Agriculture."
In the following years, due to the increased training load and the number of students on the basis of this department, there were established new departments: "Economics of Socialist Agriculture" and "Accounting and Statistics in Agriculture".
In 1974-1982 the department was headed by associate professors Maharram Hajiyev, in 1982-1992 Ispandiyar Isgandarov, in 1992-2003 Ibrahim Rzayev, in 2003-2009 Tofig Bagirov, in 2009-2011 Zakir Ahmadov, in 2012-2015 Afeddin Hamidov, in 2015-2020 Ehtibar Imamverdiyev.
Currently, the department is headed by Vahid Amrahov Tofig, Doctor of Philosophy in Economics, Associate Professor.
At the moment employees of the department carry out research work on "Historical stages of cooperation in the agricultural sector, legal aspects, its economic, organizational, management, financial and accounting mechanisms."
At the moment, the training of personnelis being carried out at the bachelor's degree, "Business Administration", "Management" (German program), at the master's degree, "Business Organization and Management", "Management" (German program), and at the doctoral degree, 53.12.01 - "Sectoral Economics".
Since 2019, the department has been operating under the name "agribusiness and management".
The academic staff of the department consists of 25 people, including 5 associate professors, 8 senior lecturers, 12 assistants.
